My Tribe for Life

We recently started watching the show Alone on the History Channel. It’s the ultimate adventure in survival and true grit. Contestants are left out in the wilds of Vancouver Island, by themselves, with a handful of survival tools and knowledge to get them through. There is no end date. It continues until you are the last one standing.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The first several people tap out because of wildlife scares from bears and mountain lions. The next group because they can’t find enough to eat. The next group because they find that being alone in the wild isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The last ones standing go through this self-reflection and really begin to grasp an understanding of what truly matters in life. It’s a really fascinating journey for these contestants.

I stand in awe not only because I think I could never do it but mostly because I wouldn’t want to. Life is so much sweeter sharing it with those that you love and who love you back. Although there is a $500,000 prize at the end for the winner, I think most contestants on the show would say that they won something out there far greater than a monetary prize. They all seem to have a moment of realization that the people in their life are so important to who they are, and many begin to question if the experience is worth the time away and the isolation they face.

The people in my life, both past and present, have shaped who I am. They push me to go outside of my boundaries and explore the depths of life. This journey isn’t always about travel or adventure. Sometimes it’s the moments we spend with our tribe that really inspire us. A long run with my mom. Working on a project with my dad. Playing pickleball with my sister and brother-in-law. Watching my niece and nephew play soccer with their mom proudly standing next to me. Driving off road with Stef. Playing trivia every Tuesday night with friends. My tribe…my people…are the reason I travel and explore. They light the fire in my soul and help me to press on when the going gets rough. And sometimes, the going is really rough.

Hang on to your tribe. Laugh with them often, even through pain. Savor the sweet moments. This life is fleeting. Enjoy it and the people surrounding you.
